Prep took nine talented orators to the State Speech and Debate Tournament in Las Cruces. Of these nine, seven made it to finals; and placed in the top four or better. Gina Maran ’16 placed fourth in Humorous Interpretation, Ashley Thomas ’17 took third in Lincoln Douglas, and Giacomo Coppola ’18 and Pema Baldwin ’18 also took third in Policy Debate. Winning Lincoln Douglas in come-from-behind-fashion was Cameron Gonzales ’17, and Mike Laposata ’16 “Phelps-ed it” by winning both Policy Debate—with his partner Sarbjot Jessop ’18—as well as International Extemporaneous. It was a remarkable showing, and Prep was the only school with fewer than 15 participants to bring home a School of Excellence trophy.
