Raul Midón ’84 at The Lensic

The wonderful and magnetic Prep grad Raul Midón ’84 is returning home to play at The Lensic on February 5 at 7:30 pm. This performance is a community-wide benefit concert for Breakthrough Santa Fe and Tuition Assistance at Santa Fe Prep, and a chance to honor Jim Leonard’s 21 years as Head of School.

Raul has been nominated for 2 Grammys in the Best Vocal Jazz Album category and has collaborated with jazz heroes such as Herbie Hancock and Bill Withers. According to The New York Times, Raul is “ …a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus.” Midón was told as a child that his blindness meant “you can’t do this, you can’t do that,” and since then, he has lived a life devoted to beating the odds and shattering stereotypes, learning his own lessons along the way. “As someone who has never seen, I’ve always felt at a disadvantage, in that lyric writing is usually very visual,” he says. “People really relate to images, and I’ve never seen images. But what I realized early on is that you have to write from what you know, and I hear, touch and feel intensely – and those are sensations and experiences that everyone can relate to.”

Prep’s Class of 2019 had the honor of hearing from Raul at their Commencement last May when, early in his talk, Raul confessed, “The first thing I’m going to talk about is betting against the odds. I’m a blind guy from rural New Mexico, and I was not supposed to be doing this.”  Raul credits much of his success to recognizing certain “crossroads” in his life—including the decision to attend Prep with his twin brother, also blind from birth—and making good choices.
