Prep’s Athletics Teams Persevere!

Santa Fe Prep sports seasons were compacted into one this year, so we have much to share as many of our teams finish up their seasons. Here are some updates on all our Blue Griffins:

Soccer
Congratulations to the boys soccer team! They were undefeated in their district and beat crosstown rival St. Mike’s twice, making a name as district champions. This win gave them a State berth, and although they lost in the semifinals to the #1 seed Sandia Prep, the season was a resounding success. Seniors Xander Hnasko, Luke Trevisani, Leo Smith, AJ Kurth and Sebastian Schriber led a dedicated and united team. Congratulations to Luke Trevisani ’21 and Sam Little ’22, who were named as All-State Players on the Second Team! Congrats as well to seniors Allison Kice and Luz Thunder who led the girls team to a strong finish by completing their season with a win over Monte del Sol!

Swimming and Diving
The boys and girls teams won the Griffin Invitational meet last weekend defeating St. Mike’s and Santa Fe High. Sophia Gossum ’22 placed 1st in the 50 and 100 Freestyle; Henry Lyons ’24 placed 1st in the 200 Free and 2nd in 100 Backstroke; Yangchen Rotto ’22 placed 1st in the 200 IM and second in the 100 Back; Nico Roth ’23 placed 1st in 50 Free and second in 100 Fly; Ethan Quintana De Andres ’25 placed 3rd in 100 Fly; Ellen McAlpin ’22 placed 2nd in 100 breaststroke; Hayden Parks ’23 placed 3rd in 200 Free; Emery Kurth ’24 and Michael Vimont ’22 placed 1st in Diving; and the boys relay team of Henry Lyons, Nico Roth, Jack Dolan ’23, and Oli Olson ’21 won the 200 Medley and 200 Free Relays. The teams are preparing for the district meet and hope to send a strong squad to the state championships mid May.

Lacrosse
Boys and girls lacrosse have yet to lose. The boys varsity team is starting their season undefeated, having won their last six games! The boys team is led by seniors Shay Shay Namchak, Ethan Caldwell, and Sam Child.  Additionally, this is the first time ever that Santa Fe Prep lacrosse has a boys JV team. The team includes players from Prep, NMSA, Mandela, Santa Fe High, ATC, The Masters Program, and BYU online. We congratulate them on their recent win against Sandia Prep. Led by Chelsea Griscom 21, Sophie Addison ’22, and Camille Kruger ’22, the girls lacrosse team won both of their two games this season against Duke City and Bosque Prep.

Basketball
The girls varsity basketball team, led by Luz Thunder ’21 and Anna Knight ’22, finished its season with a win over Monte del Sol, sending seniors Luz Thunder and Megan Lewis off in style. A special shout out to top scorers Isabella Caldwell ’24, Elsie Odai ’25, and Anna Knight ’22. The boys won their first district game of the season by beating Raton. The team recognized seniors Sam Cooper, Zac Cordova, Xander Hnasko, AJ Kurth and Kagan Rowland. at the final game of the regular season.

Tennis, Golf, and Track are hoping to develop momentum for a strong finish that will take them into June where the state championships have been extended to allow for all the sports to compete during this condensed second half of the school year.

We’re proud of all our athletes for rising to the occasion this year amidst the challenges of COVID. Well done, Griffins!
