Dorothy Melander-Dayton ’07 is a theater maker and designer. She obtained her Masters in Performance Design and Practice from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in 2014, where she co-founded the theater company Mapped Productions. Since 2015 she has been working with A Host of People in Detroit, where she is a company member. In addition to her work with these companies, she maintains her own performance practice and was an artist in residence at 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo, Japan.
Dorothy’s live performance lecture-meets-puppet-show, Yokomeshi, a meal eaten sideways, is launching at the Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe (CCA) on November 15. Yokomeshi explores the complicated and intricate relationship between Japan and the United States from historical and contemporary perspectives. More specifically, it is an investigation of cultural exchange, which has been predicated on imperialism and capitalism. Yokomeshi asks if it is possible to have meaningful cultural exchange that is rooted in these global systems, and what that looks like.
