An Unparalleled Career

Steve Machen, who first joined Prep’s faculty in 1974, retired at the end of June after 37 years with the school.  Friends and colleagues paid tribute to the former head of school and current language department chair during a special ceremony at the end of the school year, and the language lab was named in his honor.

During his tenure with Prep, Machen held numerous positions, including language teacher, language department chair, assistant head of school and head of school.  In addition, he organized and chaperoned numerous student trips to Mexico and Latin America and initiated the award-winning Teen Action Program (TAP) as part of the School’s curriculum.  According to head of school, Jim Leonard, “Steve has given this school his heart and his keen intellect, forging relationships with students across four decades.  We are ever grateful.”
