Listening before responding is a valuable part of effective communication. When approaching a conversation, especially with the intent of convincing someone, it's tempting to undermine, brush off, or oversimplify someone's opinion. While quick remarks make you sound smart, they rarely change someone's mind. Whether in debate, persuasive or informative writing, or art, conversations are most effective when you make the conscious effort to understand.
