Colorado College – Soccer

How did Prep prepare you to play at the collegiate level?
Being a scholar-athlete, I was very well-prepared. Having to balance the academics at Prep and the commitment to basketball and soccer helped me develop really good habits. The teachers here were really accommodating in terms of away games. When I got to CC and now have weekend trips to Texas, I find I have time to do my work and still be committed to the games we have to play.

In terms of the level of soccer competition—at Prep and with the club play at Northern—I felt fully prepared to continue to compete at the college level.

How do you juggle your classes and your practice/game schedule?
I’ve always been someone who functions better when I have a lot to do than when I do not. We went to morning practices this fall, so we were practicing 6:30-8:30, before classes, then we’d sometimes lift after my lab in the afternoon. I’m able to get into a routine where I know I have to be productive—and that’s something I had to do at Prep, as well.

What is your favorite memory from your Prep athletic career?
That’s pretty easy—winning our state championship game in 2014 after four overtimes. It’s something we all wanted all year; very rarely in sports does it work out just the way you want it. That championship felt like the culmination of four years of work we put in as a team. Now that I’ve played even more games, I realize how rare it is for everything to come together.

What advice would you give to current Prep athletes who want to play in college?
Biggest piece of advice is to put the time in and just stick with it. Be willing to put in the work—the off-season training, going out there by yourself sometimes to continue to develop. To compete at the college level, people need to be ready to do more than what’s expected. All of this really stems from enjoying what you do. I really love soccer and just feel so fortunate to be able to put so much energy and time towards it. And know that four college seasons go really fast.

What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at Prep? At college?
I was really fortunate to have teammates at Prep with whom I grew up playing soccer. To have us all be on one team at the same time, to know each other so well both on and off the field, and to achieve what we set out to do—the state championship—that was just icing on the cake. A lot of the people in my class senior year I feel as if I’ve known since I was a little kid. Being at a small school like Prep put us in close quarters and allowed us to develop really great relationships.
