Clubs and Activities
Prep offers a wide range of clubs and activities that allow students to pursue passions and interests, develop socially and intellectually, and stay connected with peers outside the classroom. The selection varies from year to year based on student interests and initiative, and students are encouraged to contact their division head if they are interested in starting a new club or after-school activity. Among the clubs and activities you might expect to find in any given year:
Sustainability Council
To support and extend Prep’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Council involves interested students, parents and faculty in various initiatives, from planting a vegetable garden to exploring a greenhouse to monitoring the School’s energy use.
Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA)
This group talks openly about gender issues, plans events and works to create a supportive atmosphere on campus. All students, gay/straight/questioning, are welcome.
Speech and Debate
Speech and Debate is a great activity for improving speaking, writing, organization and confidence. The team competes at tournaments around the state throughout the school year, and students meet twice monthly for coaching and practice.
Project GUTS
“Growing Up Thinking Scientifically,” or Project GUTS, is a summer and after-school science, technology, engineering and math program for middle school students hosted by the Santa Fe Institute and funded by the National Science Foundation, LANL and several other organizations. Prep has an active and dynamic chapter, with students meeting each week to learn to look at the world and ask questions, develop answers through scientific inquiry and design solutions to problems. For more information, visit the Project GUTS website.
Additional student activities at Prep often include Model United Nations, Chess Club, Math Club, The Skirmisher (student literary magazine), The Griffin (student newspaper), Prom Committee, Photo Club, and the Social Activism Club.
